Center for the Treatment of Problem Sexual Behavior

The Center for the Treatment of Problem Sexual Behavior (CTPSB) serves to prevent future sexual abuse through state-of-the-art assessment, treatment and training.

CTPSB is committed to the enhancement of the community via the reduction of sexual violence. We accomplish this by working in a collaborative effort with the criminal justice and victim advocacy systems, utilizing research valid methodologies in the treatment and management of sexual offenders.

The Center is comprised of Adult Services, Juvenile Services, Developmental Disabilities Program, and The January Center, the state's first residential treatment center for problem sexual behavior. Both Juvenile Services and the Developmental Disabilities program provide assessment and treatment for victims of sexual violence as well as sexual offenders.

The main office is located in Middletown, however, specialized evaluation and treatment services are provided statewide in Middletown, New Haven, Bridgeport, Norwalk, Stamford, Danbury, Waterbury, New Britain, Torrington, Bristol, Hartford, Manchester, Norwich, Montville and New London. Through subcontractors, services are provided in Willimantic, Stratford, Danielson, and Shelton.

Adult Services

Upon referral to CTPSB, an intensive assessment is completed. Several modes are employed:

Family, social, sexual, medical, and substance abuse histories are gathered during a structured interview process

Empirically based risk assessment tools are used

Psychological testing and intelligence testing are employed when indicated

Psychiatric evaluations with the Center’s consultation psychiatrist when testing and clinical interviews indicate it's necessity

The treatment model is a long term model that generally takes 3-5 years to complete

The Center’s specialized treatment, primarily a cognitive behavioral model, consists of several components, including: cognitive lab, cognitive restructuring, arousal control training, relapse prevention planning and family and couples education

Juvenile Services

Evaluating the juvenile who displays problem sexual behavior is an important task that requires specialized assessment skills and testing tools that are known to be effective with these youths. The Center’s juvenile assessments provide referral sources with information regarding a youth’s:

Risk to re-offend sexually and non-sexually

Socio-emotional and adaptive functioning

Supervision and community safety needs

Recommendations for treatment

Family functioning

Developmental Disabilities

The Developmental Disabilities Program works with the State of Connecticut Department of Mental Retardation and private providers in the North Central, South Central, and Eastern Regions. Many individuals in this program have dual diagnoses. Our program has utilized dialectical behavior therapy, which affords us the opportunity to work closely with other mental health providers.
